Day Trips from Ericeira

Ericeira is a popular holiday destination and an excellent choice for a relaxing base along the Lisbon coast. Some of the best day trips from Ericeira include Mafra, Sintra and of course Lisbon.

Mafra Palace

Just a short journey from Mary Sarah is the beautiful Mafra Palace. Mafra itself doesn’t have too much to do but Mafra Palace is stunning and a great example of Portuguese architecture.

Mafra National Palace

It’s also likely to be less crowded than the palaces of Lisbon and Sintra. Mafra Palace is not too close to the train station and so train isn’t the best way to get there. I would advise that you go by bus car or private transfer. Mafra Palace is one of the easiest and most popular day trips from Ericeira.

Sintra

A short drive from Ericeira is the beautiful Portuguese destination of Sintra. Famous for its castles, policies I’m stunning scenery this is an unmissable destination in Portugal. Pina Palace is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life and is my favourite site in the whole of Portugal. also don’t miss the Moorish Castle and Sintra Palace.

Carcavelos

If you are looking for another good beach destination it’s very easy to get to Carcavelos from Ericeira. Carcavelos beach makes for a lovely family day out and it’s also a good destination for first time surfers. The waves there are a little milder and easier than the Ericeira waves.

Cascais

Along the Lisbon coast lies the beautiful fishing village of Cascais. Its beauty and proximity to Lisbon make it a top destination for wealthy foreginers and expats.

Lisbon

If you are spending five days to a week in Ericeira and haven’t yet seen Portugal’s capital city then this is definitely doable in a day. You would ideally like to spend two or three full days in Lisbon to truly appreciate what is on offer. However if you are short of time or simply prefer to spend more time along the coast you can see the main sites of Lisbon in just one day.

The Ultimate Lisbon Public Transport Guide

Don’t miss Castelo sao George and the monuments of Belem. A good option if you are doing Lisbon in one day from Ericeira is to hire a tour guide who will drive you to Lisbon, show you the main sites and then drive you back.

Obidos

If you want to visit a village with a traditional Portuguese feel then head North to Obidos. The stunning castle overlooks this walled Medieval town where you can roam the cobbled streets drinking Ginja (cherry liqiour) from a chocolate cup! You can also walk the length of the Obidos aqueduct which was built around 1570. Obidos is possibly one of the most picturesque and historical old towns in this part of Portugal.

Peniche

If you fancy going North further up the Silver Coast, then how about a day trip to Peniche? Peniche is laid back and popular holiday destination located on a peninsular that juts out into the Atlantic. Relax on Beleal and Superturbos beach. Enjoy a cocktail while the waves lap up the Peniche cliffs. If you are up for it, take a boat out to Berlengas island for some wildlife spotting (dolphins, kestrels and nesting gulls).
