Alfama
If traditional Portuguese streets are what you are looking for, then the Alfama neighborhood might be just right for you. This neighborhood is also home to some of the most authentic Fado bars with lots of traditional Portuguese music and restaurants. The streets are cobbled and narrow – be prepared for a fair bit of walking uphill!
Belem
Belem is further along the river Tagus and offers a more tranquil and relaxed atmosphere, while still being well connected by the train from Cais do Sodre. With trams also running through this region, transportation has never been easier! It is home to some important landmarks including Jeronimos Monastery and the Monument of Discovery.
Bairro Alto
If you are a party animal head to Bairro Alto! The name means ‘high town or high district and it is home to some of the best nightclubs in town. With so much going on in one central location, noise levels could prove too high to sleep so don’t forget to bring your ear plugs!
Barrio Alto is also a hotspot for bohemian types and you will find great restaurants ranging from international cuisine to Portuguese fare with locals, expats and visitors all mingling together!
Baixa-Chiado
For city living, Baixa-Chiado is the best bet. This area offers many of Lisbon’s shops and restaurants within walking distance, as well as beautiful views of the River Tagus from high-rise buildings. It’s easy to get around with trams and a metro stop.
There are lots of cafes and antique stores available if that is what you enjoy doing on vacation – or maybe even shopping for some clothes during a stayover?
Campolide
Campolide is a more suburban area of Lisbon and is popular with families. The good thing about Campolide is that prices are much more reasonable than downtown Lisbon for coffees and eating out. It’s also well connected by the Lisbon Metro.
It’s the perfect spot to catch some sun on it’s many beaches or in one of the many green parks dotted around Campolide!
