Faro to Olhão

Olhão is a small fishing village on the Algarve coast which has become a popular destination for tourists and also those looking to relocate to the Algarve. It’s a popular destination for Brits, Germans and Belgians who are looking for the climate with less hustle and bustle of Faro or Lagos. Olhão is famous for its traditional style ground floor tiled houses. It’s extremely easy to get from Faro to Olhão and you can do it as a day trip from Faro if you wish – it’s only a 10-15 minute journey.

What is the best way to get from Faro to Olhão?

The best and easiest way to get from Faro to Olhão is by train. Faro train station is very central and walkable from the main streets of Faro in about 10-15 minutes. Check the timetable as the trains are less frequent if you are in Portugal in Winter.

You can buy your train ticket at the station in Faro and they usually speak English there, but if you want to practice your Portuguese you can say ‘Eu quero ir a Olhao’ (I want to go to Olhao). Ask for ida-y-volta for there and back (return ticket) and ‘hoje’ for today. Arrive at the station about 15 minutes before the train so that you have time to buy your ticket and find the platform (linha).

Your ticket to Olhao will be around €4-5. The train from Faro to Olhao is just 12 minutes and it’s two stops. There is a very small stop called Bom Jiao in between. When you get off the train in Olhao it’s just 5 minutes to the city centre from the station on foot. Head towards the main Church Igreja Matriz and everything is walkable.

Other ways to get from Faro to Olhão

You can drive from Faro to Olhão very easily if you have a car – take the N125 and you will get to Olhao in about 10 minutes providing there is no traffic. A taxi should cost somewhere between €8-12. You can also cycle from Faro to Olhão in around 30 minutes.
