Faro to Tavira

Tavira makes a fantastic day trip from Faro if you have long enough to make the journey. You might also be flying into Faro airport but staying in Tavira. So what’s the best way to get from Faro to Tavira? I recommend that you take the train.

What’s the best way to get from faro to Tavira?

Train

To get from Faro to Tavira by train is very easy. Go to Faro train station and take the train in the direction of Vila Real de Santo Antonio (which is the last city in the Algarve on the Spanish border). It takes around 40 minutes and my ticket (Dec 2021) cost me €6.80 return. The trains run every hour but it may change to every two hours in the winter time so check the times in advance.

Faro station is just a 5-10 minute walk from Faro city centre. Although Faro is classed as a city by Portuguese standards, it is actually quite small. If you are coming from Faro airport, take the 16 bus to Faro city centre, or grab an Uber which is very quick (15 mins) and only around €7 (Dec 2021).

You can get your ticket to Tavira at Faro station and they speak English, but you can also take the opportunity to ask for your ticket in Portuguese! You can say ‘Quero ir a Tavira por favor.’ (I want to go to Tavira). If you want a return you need to ask for ‘Ida y volta'(there and back) or ‘bilhete de volta’ (return ticket).

Bus

The bus to Tavira will take almost 1h30 and isn’t actually that much cheaper than the train and so I wouldn’t recommend it. From the Turismo do Algarve take the 67 towards Antonio. You can buy a ticket at the bus station or on the bus. Have change or small notes ready.

Car

You can drive to Tavira from Faro in around half an hour. The quickest route is via the A22. It is not recommended to take a taxi from Faro to Tavira as it can be expensive (expect at least €30-€50)
