Lisbon to Setubal

It’s very easy to get from Lisbon to Setubal by bus. I took the journey from Lisbon to Setubal last summer from Bairro Alto and it was less than an hour and a half in total. The best way to get there is to take the Lisbon Metro to Jardim Zoologica (For Sete Rios station) and get the bus from there to Setubal.

How to pronounce Setubal

It’s important to pronounce it right so that you can be understood by drivers. ‘Setubal’ has a stress or accent on the ‘u’ and a silent ‘l’ at the end so it actually becomes set-ooo-bow! It’s important to pronounce it like this to drivers and ticket offices.

Get to Sete Rios

First get to Sete Rios, which is well serviced by the Metrolink. The nearest Metro Jardim Zoologica and the best way to use the Metro in my opinion is to use a Viva Viagem card. This is a card that can be topped up and it will just take what you use. It works a bit like the Oyster card system in London.

Bus from Lisbon Sete Rios to Setubal

From Sete Rios get the 561 (TST) to Setubal which is the express. There are others, but the 561 is the express which can get you there within around 40-50 minutes. The others that are not express or ‘Rapida’ will stop at every stop there is and take up to an hour and a half.

This service starts operating at 5:45 AM and ends at 7:30 PM, but check on the following websites for the most up to date information. Remember that times on important dates such as Christmas, Easter and Feast of the Immaculate Conception may change.

There’s also the 562 that goes from Oriente, if that’s easier for you: https://www.tsuldotejo.pt/index.php?page=viajar&sub=viajar&categoria=3&subcategoria=&carreira=1353
